Why this breed group destroys ordinary collars

If you've gone through two or three collars already, nothing here will surprise you. Three things are working against store-bought gear:

1. Maximum muscle on a compact frame. An adult Pitbull or AmStaff typically weighs 30–40 kg (66–88 lb); an XL Bully goes well past that. But unlike a giant breed, all of that power sits low and close to the ground — so when the dog hits the end of the leash, the force arrives as a short, sharp shock, not a slow lean. Thin collars fail exactly there: at the stitch line or the buckle holes, usually the moment you can least afford it.

2. A neck built like a shoulder. This breed group's neck — often 45–60 cm (17.7–23.6 in) around, on a dog that stands knee-high — is thicker relative to body size than almost any other breed's. How to measure a Pitbull or Bully for a collar

Take a soft tape measure. Measure around the neck where the collar will actually sit — snug but not tight, with room to slide two fingers underneath.

Collar or harness — the honest answer

For everyday walks and control, a properly fitted wide collar is right for this breed group — the neck is strong, and a wide padded band handles normal leash work comfortably. For sustained hard pulling — weight-pull conditioning, spring pole days, running, or a dog still learning leash manners — a harness moves the load onto the chest, where this breed's build carries it best. Caring for leather on a short-coated powerhouse
