Best Collar for a Mastiff — A Guide from the People Who Make Them

The short answer: a Mastiff needs a collar that is wide — 6.3 cm (2.5 in) at minimum, padded with a smooth interior that won't chafe loose skin, built on heavy-duty hardware, and — this is the part that stops most owners — actually made in their size. Why Mastiffs break ordinary collars

At 60–100 kg (130–220 lb), a Mastiff isn't just a bigger dog — it's a dog where every collar problem gets magnified. Three things matter most:

1. The size chart runs out before the dog does. Most collar brands top out around a 55–60 cm (21.7–23.6 in) neck. A grown Mastiff starts there. Owners tell us the same story: they didn't come to us for the leather — they came because nothing else fastened around their dog. And a collar forced onto its last hole carries the full load at the strap's weakest point. Your Mastiff's neck size should sit in the middle of the range, not at the end of it.

2. A too-narrow collar digs in — badly. Pressure is force divided by area, and a Mastiff supplies more force than almost any breed on earth without even meaning to pull. A 2.5 cm (1 in) strap on a 90 kg (198 lb) dog concentrates all of that on a thin line of the throat. A wide collar — 6.3 cm (2.5 in) and up — spreads the same load across more than double the area. On this breed, width isn't a style choice. It's the difference between a collar and a cheese wire.

3. Loose jowls and skin folds chafe. A Mastiff's neck carries loose skin — the dewlap and folds that define the breed. Rough strap edges, exposed rivet backs, and stiff synthetic webbing rub inside those folds, and the dog can't tell you until the skin is raw. How to measure a Mastiff for a collar

Take a soft tape measure. Measure around the neck where the collar will actually sit — roughly where the neck meets the jawline — snug but not tight, with the tape lying flat over the skin folds rather than pressed into them.

Most adult Mastiffs measure between 60 and 75 cm (23.6–29.5 in). In our sizing that usually means:

🔸 Size XXL — neck 65–75 cm (25.6–29.6 in) — most adult males
🔸 Growing puppy? A Mastiff gains neck size until age three. Buy for today's measurement, not the adult guess — and expect to size up at least once.

The fit test for this breed: two fingers of slack under the fastened collar — measured over the skin folds, not between them. Then re-check every few months; a Mastiff's neck changes with age and condition more than most breeds', and a collar that fit in spring can pinch by fall.

Collar or harness — the honest answer

For walking and everyday control, a properly fitted wide collar is right for this breed — it sits where your leverage is best, and on a dog this strong, control is a safety issue for everyone on the sidewalk. For sustained pulling, draft work, or long training sessions, a harness spreads load across the chest and takes the neck out of the equation. The honest catch: the harness itself must be rated for a 90 kg (198 lb) dog — an undersized harness fails harder than an undersized collar. Caring for leather on a drooly breed

There will be drool. Leather handles it better than fabric webbing — it wipes clean instead of soaking it up — but it earns a little routine:

🔸 Wipe with a barely damp cloth after walks — especially inside the folds where drool collects against the collar
🔸 Condition with a neutral leather balm two or three times a year
🔸 Check the fit every few months — a Mastiff's neck keeps changing into year three
🔸 If your dog swims, take the collar off first — water is leather's only real enemy

Is a collar or a harness better for a Mastiff?
Both, for different jobs: a well-fitted wide collar for everyday walks and control, a properly rated harness for sustained pulling or draft work, where the load belongs on the chest. Whatever you choose must be rated for the dog's actual weight — 60–100 kg (130–220 lb).

Are leather collars good for Mastiffs with skin folds?
Yes — if the interior is right. Loose jowls and neck folds chafe against rough edges and stiff synthetic webbing.
