The short answer: for walks, your Frenchie needs a harness — not a collar. French Bulldogs are a flat-faced breed with a compressed airway, and leash pressure on the throat is a breathing risk we won't talk around. A collar still has a real job on this breed — ID tags, the signature look, and short controlled moments — but the leash clips to the chest, not the neck. Why the Frenchie is a special case

Four things about this breed change the gear math:

1. The flat face comes with a compressed airway. A French Bulldog's short muzzle packs the same breathing equipment into far less space. That's why Frenchies snort, snore, and run out of air faster in heat. It's also why pressure on the windpipe — exactly what a tight leash on a collar delivers — is a bigger deal for this breed than for almost any other. 2. The neck is nearly as wide as the head. A Doberman slips collars because its head is narrower than its neck. A Frenchie has the opposite build — a broad skull on a thick, short neck — so a collar rarely slides off forward. The catch: that same shape makes a collar sit low, right over the throat, which is precisely where this breed can't afford pressure. The anatomy itself is telling you where the leash belongs.

3. Skin folds need a soft interior. Those wrinkles are part of the charm, and they're also skin that rubs. Stiff synthetic webbing and exposed hardware backs chafe folds fast. Every piece we recommend below is lined with soft leather over Orthopedic Foam — smooth against the skin, nothing sharp touching your dog.

4. Small dog, real pull. An adult Frenchie weighs 8–14 kg (17–31 lb) and is dense muscle for its size. When something across the street demands investigation, that's genuine force — enough to snap flimsy hardware, and enough to make throat pressure a daily event on a collar walk. Gear for this breed has to be small and strong. That combination is rarer than it should be.

How to measure a French Bulldog

Two measurements, thirty seconds, soft tape measure:

🔸 Chest (for the harness): around the widest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs. Most adult Frenchies land between 50 and 60 cm (19.7–23.6 in).
🔸 Neck (for the collar): around the middle of the neck where a collar sits, snug but not tight. Most adults measure 30–40 cm (11.8–15.7 in).

The honest sizing note: our size S collars fit necks of 35–42.5 cm (13.8–16.7 in). Most adult male Frenchies land inside that range. A smaller female or a puppy under 35 cm (13.8 in) is below our smallest collar size — if that's your dog, skip the collar for now and run harness-only. We'd rather lose the sale than sell you a collar that doesn't fit. Harness sizing is more forgiving: our size S covers a chest of 40–73 cm (15.7–28.7 in), which takes in practically every Frenchie, puppy to broad adult male.

So where does the collar belong?

Three places, and we mean all three:

🔸 ID, always. Tags live on the collar. A harness comes off at home; the collar with your phone number shouldn't.
🔸 The look. A Frenchie in a spiked leather collar is a statement no other breed makes quite the same way. Wear it out — just clip the leash to the harness.
🔸 Short, controlled moments. The vet's waiting room, a photo, a quick step onto the balcony. Calm situations under your hands — not sustained leash pressure.

Caring for leather on a wrinkled dog

Leather and skin folds get along fine with a small routine:

🔸 Wipe collar and harness with a barely damp cloth after walks — drool and fold-funk build up faster on this breed
🔸 Let leather air-dry naturally; never park it on a radiator
🔸 Condition with a neutral leather balm two or three times a year
🔸 Check fit monthly on a young dog — Frenchies fill out fast, and a fold pinched under a strap is a fold that gets sore
🔸 Off for swimming and bath time — water is leather's only real enemy
