Best Collar for a Bull Terrier — A Guide from the People Who Make Them
The short answer: a Bull Terrier is compact, muscular and far stronger than its size suggests, so it needs a 5 cm (2 in) padded leather collar — usually size S or M on our charts — rather than a giant-breed collar. For walks with a dog that pulls, add a leather harness in our "M — Bull Terrier size" (chest 50–75 cm / 19.7–29.5 in). And where a muzzle is needed, our size L basket muzzles are the ones sized for the breed.
BESTIA COLLARS® has made leather gear in Pazardzhik, Bulgaria since 2015 — it started when our founder couldn't find a collar strong enough for his own two Cane Corsos. Bull Terriers are one of the compact power breeds our small-to-medium range is built around. Here's what fits them.
What makes a Bull Terrier different
🔸 Power in a compact body. A Bull Terrier is muscular from nose to tail. It pulls like a much bigger dog, but a wide giant-breed collar is simply too much for its neck.
🔸 A playful, mouthy dog. Bull Terriers love to tug, chew and wrestle. Gear has to cope with play as well as walks — thick belt leather and hardware that's riveted, not glued.
🔸 A short, flat coat. There's little coat between the collar and the skin, so rough edges and stiff webbing rub quickly. A padded leather lining makes the difference.
The collar: 5 cm, padded, sized S or M
Width: 5 cm (2 in) is the sweet spot for this breed — wide enough to spread the pull of a strong dog, not so wide that it overwhelms a compact neck. Our 2-inch collars name the Bull Terrier in their fitting guides.
How to measure: wrap a soft tape around the neck where the collar will sit, a little above the base of the neck, snug but not tight. Then check the chart:
🔸 S — neck 35–42.5 cm (13.8–16.7 in)
🔸 M — neck 42.5–50 cm (16.7–19.7 in)
🔸 A big, heavy-necked male can go beyond M — several collars below continue to L (from 50 cm / 19.7 in).
The fit test: two flat fingers should slide under the fastened collar. Tighter presses; looser lets the collar slide down to the base of the neck, where you have the least control.

The harness: "M — Bull Terrier size"
For a dog that pulls hard, a harness takes the load off the neck and puts it on the chest — and the Bull Terrier's broad, deep chest carries one well. Several of our small-to-medium harnesses come in a size we literally call "M — Bull Terrier size": chest 50–75 cm (19.7–29.5 in), lower neck 35–58 cm (13.8–22.8 in). Measure the chest at its widest point, just behind the front legs.
🔸 The "Bowtie" harness — padded chest plate, a leather bowtie with decorative stitching, harness or harness-and-leash set
🔸 The "Rocky" studded harness — studded, with a padded chest plate in red, black or white
🔸 The "Metal" harness, personalized — 4 mm (0.16 in) Italian belt leather, padded chest plate, engraved with your dog's name
🔸 The "Bijou" harness — padded with nappa leather on the chest plate
The muzzle: size L
Vet visits, public transport, a grooming appointment — and in some countries and cities, local rules for certain breeds. If your Bull Terrier needs a muzzle, choose a basket muzzle: the dog can breathe and pant freely. On our charts, Bull Terriers wear size L — muzzle circumference up to 30.5 cm (12 in). Measure around the widest part of the muzzle with the mouth closed. Our leather basket muzzles have a soft padded nose.

FAQ
What width of collar is best for a Bull Terrier?
5 cm (2 in). It's wide enough to spread the pull of a strong, compact dog without overwhelming its neck. Choose a padded leather lining for the short coat.
What size collar does a Bull Terrier need?
Measure the neck where the collar sits. On BESTIA charts most Bull Terriers wear size S (35–42.5 cm / 13.8–16.7 in) or M (42.5–50 cm / 16.7–19.7 in); big males may need L (from 50 cm / 19.7 in).
What size harness does a Bull Terrier need?
Our "M — Bull Terrier size" harnesses fit a chest of 50–75 cm (19.7–29.5 in) and a lower neck of 35–58 cm (13.8–22.8 in). Measure the chest at its widest point, just behind the front legs.
What size muzzle does a Bull Terrier need?
On BESTIA charts, Bull Terriers wear size L basket muzzles — muzzle circumference up to 30.5 cm (12 in). Measure around the widest part of the muzzle with the mouth closed.
Collar or harness for a Bull Terrier?
Both have a job: a padded 5 cm collar for everyday wear and ID tags, a leather harness for walks with a dog that pulls, so the load sits on the chest instead of the neck.
Will a leather collar survive a Bull Terrier?
Thick belt leather with riveted hardware handles a strong, playful dog well. Keep it conditioned, take it off for rough play, and check the buckle holes and rivets every few months.
