Best Collar for a Rottweiler — A Guide from the People Who Make Them

The short answer: a Rottweiler needs a collar that is wide — 5 cm (2 in) at minimum, ideally 6.3 cm (2.5 in) — built on thick belt leather, with hardware rated for real force, and available in true XL and XXL sizes. That last part matters more than most owners realize: a Rottweiler's neck commonly measures 55–70 cm (21.7–27.6 in) — one of the thickest in dogdom — and many collars sold as "large" simply stop before that range begins. Why most collars aren't built for a neck like this

Three things make the Rottweiler a special case:

1. The neck outruns the size chart. An adult Rottweiler weighs 40–60 kg (88–132 lb), and the neck carries a proportional share of that muscle: most adults tape between 55 and 70 cm (21.7–27.6 in). Plenty of collars marketed for "big dogs" top out around 55–60 cm (21.7–23.6 in) — which means the largest size on the rack is this breed's starting point. If a brand's chart ends where your measurement begins, that collar was never designed for your dog. Our size run goes to XXL — a neck of 65–75 cm (25.6–29.6 in) — because dogs like yours are our order book.

2. Pulling is in the breed, not a bad habit. The Rottweiler is a drover's dog from Rottweil, Germany — it drove cattle to market and pulled the butcher's cart for centuries. That working heritage means an instinct to lean into resistance with the whole body. A narrow strap concentrates all of that force on a couple of centimeters of throat. A wide collar — 5 cm (2 in) and up — spreads the same force across a much larger area: less pressure per square centimeter, more comfort, more control. On this breed, width is not a style choice. It's the mechanism.

3. Force this size finds weak points. Thin fashion leather cracks. Stitched-on D-rings tear out. Plastic buckles are not a conversation worth having. For a dog with this much power, the whole chain has to hold: a 4 mm (0.16 in) belt-leather base, metal hardware sized to the collar — 40–50 mm (1.6–2 in) buckles and D-rings in nickel-plated or stainless steel — and rivets, not glue. How to measure a Rottweiler for a collar

Take a soft tape measure. Measure around the neck where the collar will actually sit — the mid-neck, snug but not tight. On a Rottweiler the neck barely tapers, so measure carefully rather than guessing from weight.

Most adult Rottweilers land between 55 and 70 cm (21.7–27.6 in). In our sizing that usually means:

🔸 Size XL — neck 57.5–67.5 cm (22.6–26.6 in) — most adult Rottweilers, male and female
🔸 Size XXL — neck 65–75 cm (25.6–29.6 in) — the biggest males
🔸 Growing puppy? Buy for today's measurement, not the adult guess — you'll size up once, maybe twice, and that's normal for this breed.

The fit test: with the collar fastened, slide two fingers flat under it. Snug enough that it can't rotate freely, loose enough that the fingers fit. Re-check monthly until age three — Rottweilers fill out late, and last spring's fit is not this spring's fit.

Collar or harness — the honest answer

For everyday walks and control, a properly fitted wide collar is right for this breed. For sustained pulling — carting, drafting, weight work, running drills — a harness is the correct tool, and we'll say so plainly. Two reasons. First, pulling is what this breed was bred to do, and a dog doing its heritage work should push into a chest piece, not a neck strap. Second, a Rottweiler carries most of its weight in the front — that forehand mass is exactly what a well-cut harness harnesses, spreading load across the chest and shoulders and taking the neck out of the equation. Caring for leather on a Rottweiler

A leather collar on this breed ages well with almost no effort:

🔸 Condition with a neutral leather balm two or three times a year
🔸 Check the fit monthly until age three, then twice a year — this breed matures slowly
